How are words counted in Chinese or Japanese text?
English words are counted as whitespace-separated tokens. Each Chinese character (Hanzi) and Japanese kana character counts as one word, so mixed-language text is counted fairly.
How is reading time estimated?
Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute and rounded up, which approximates an average adult silent-reading speed.
How are sentences and paragraphs detected?
A sentence ends with a period, question mark or exclamation mark, including the full-width marks used in Chinese and Japanese (。！？). Paragraphs split on blank lines, so a single line break keeps the following text in the same paragraph.
